Today is the Feast of St. Teresa of Avila. She’s one of Gus’ favorite saints and he acquired a devotion to her following a pilgrimage to Spain several years ago. She was a champion of the interior prayer life, which she wrote about in her spiritual classic, “The Interior Castle” and Gus shares a few excerpts.
Also, Dr. Matthew Bunson of EWTN News calls in to talk about some news items of Catholic interest, including Pope Leo XIV’s first Apostolic Exhortation entitled “Dilexi te,” which focuses on love and care for the poor. Dr. Bunson and Gus talk about its substance and how it was started by Pope Francis. Also, they talk about a desecration that took place at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome when a man jumped on top of a confessional and attempted to urinate. Details on the man’s identity and what his motivation are unclear. Lastly, they talk about how the Vatican has appointed a judge to decide the sexual abuse case against Fr. Marko Rupnik. Fr. Rupnik is accused of sexual and psychological abuse of consecrated women under his care. He’s also an artist whose paintings and mosaics hang in churches and shrines around the world. Gus asks Dr. Bunson what will happen to all of those if he’s found guilty.
Afterwards, Gus goes over a recent survey conducted by the Catholic Project at the Catholic University of America and Gallup called “The National Study of Catholic Priests.” Its overall result shows how younger priests are much more politically conservative than older priests. Gus breaks the statistics down by age group.
