Gus talks about how today, the Church celebrates the feast day of two notable saints, St. Dymphna and St. Isidore the Farmer. St. Dymphna is the patron saint of mental illness, so Gus invites listeners who’ve struggled or have a loved one who has struggled with mental illness.
The other saint, St. Isidore the Farmer, is the patron saint of farmers and rural communities. Gus is joined by Doug Stein who is a farmer from Kansas. Doug grew up the oldest son in a Catholic farming family who raised cattle and hogs and it’s in his blood. He talks about what it was like farming as a youth and as an adult. Doug also works in finance and he talks about the cost of farming and why small farms are the extreme minority. Afterwards, Gus invites listeners who’ve been involved in farming, or have family or loved ones who are, to call in and share how their faith impacted their farming and vice versa.
This was a great show. I loved hearing from the farmers. Thank you!
