This week is Catholic Schools Week and, in celebration, Gus is joined by Cissy LaForge, the head of school at St. Michael Special School in New Orleans, Louisiana. It's a Catholic school that is dedicated solely to the education of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She shares the school's history, talks about the great teachers and staff they have and what day-to-day life is like there. Inspired by their conversation, Gus invites listeners who have loved ones with special needs to call in talk about them and their education.
Later, Gus talks discipline. One thing Catholic school is often associated with, especially with baby boomers, is discipline and corporal punishment. There are countless stories of nuns, rulers, knuckles, paddles, backsides and noses pressed to the wall.
