Last week, the Vatican issued a statement called “Mater Populi fidelis,” which states that using the term “co-redemptrix” to describe the Blessed Virgin Mary’s participation in salvation is not appropriate. It’s a description that’s been used for centuries, but some argue that it exaggerates her importance and could damage efforts for unity with other Christian denominations. Fr. Chris Alar, director of the Association of Marian Helpers, calls in to explain the title of co-redemptrix and the Vatican's recent document. He explains that he is a proponent of the term and explains to Gus and the listeners what the title actually means, pointing out that Pope St. John Paul II referred to the faithful as “mini co-redeemers.” He asks, then why would it be inappropriate for Our Lady?

Afterwards, Gus opens the phones and invites listeners to comment on the discouragement of referring to Mary as co-redemptrix by the Vatican, or on how they respond when they disagree with a pope on matters that aren’t binding to our faith.

Later, Cy Kellet of Catholic Answers calls in to talk about a new book available from Catholic Answers Press that he’s co-authored with Steve Dawson called, “How to Talk About Jesus with Anyone: Tested Techniques for Planting Seeds and Saving Souls.” Cy talks discusses the art of debate and how we can use time-tested techniques used in dealing with people who from from receptive to hostile, and how one of the key elements is to listen to what they have to say. Afterwards, Gus invites listeners who’ve been challenged over their faith to call in and share their experiences.
