Gus looks more at today’s Gospel reading from Matthew, which focuses on the genealogy of Jesus. He talks about the three women who were mentioned, Tamar, Ruth and the wife of Uriah. Two of them are known for their sexual impropriety and one was a foreigner, which means she wasn’t Jewish. The wife of Uriah is also known as Bathsheba who had an illicit affair with King David that resulted in the death of her husband and an illegitimate child who died. She later gave birth to King David’s son Solomon. Gus talks about how God writes straight with crooked lines and even Jesus’ family line isn’t exempt. He talks about his own experience with his late sister Nancy who lived a complicated life, which drove a wedge between them that ultimately dissolved when she was diagnosed with cancer and lived with him and Michelle in the final months of her life.
Also, Dr. Matthew Bunson of EWTN calls in to do a Year in Review with Gus. They go over some of the major news stories of Catholic interest, including the conclusion of the German Synodal Way, which sought to allow for women priests, a lay takeover of parishes and other radical ideas. Over its course, 400,000 Catholic left the Church. They also discuss Pope Francis’ health and travel itinerary. Though the pope has just turned 88, it has not stopped him from traveling internationally. Dr. Bunson recounts the number of trips the reigning pontiff had made in 2024. They also preview the Jubilee Year 2025, which focuses on the theme, “Pilgrims of Hope.”
