The Peace of Christ

Posted on

When Catholics go to Mass, we pause to offer one another a sign of Christ's peace. Originally this was known as the kiss of peace. It eventually became a handshake or a hug, but since Covid, I think it mostly consists now of a wave, a smile or the proverbial peace sign with fingers. IMHO, it's a shame that we've lost the physical touch aspect of this gesture.

Today's first reading from Colossians 3 is filled with so much wonderful advice from St. Paul on how to live a Christian life. And he mentions Christ's peace. "And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace to which you were also called in one Body."

That statement begs the question - What controls your heart? I must admit that far too often for me it is uneasiness, anger, fear and many other not-so-positive things. Every now and again I will truly experience the peace of Christ. I wish it would be more often. In fact, I wish it would be to the point that the peace of Christ controlled my heart. In the end, I know it's a choice, and one that I must choose more often.

Father, may the peace of Christ control our hearts more and more each day. Amen.
