The Blind Leading the Blind

Posted on

Today's Gospel reading from Luke 6 begins with Jesus asking a couple of questions. "Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit?" He then goes on to talk about pointing out a splinter in your brother's eye while you have a wooden beam in your own eye.

The blind leading the blind. That's an expression we're all familiar with. And it never has to do with people who are physically blind. It refers to those who are blind in other ways, even spiritually blind.

It seems to me that today the world is filled with echo chambers. In other words, many people only seek to hear from those with whom they agree. But what if those with whom they agree are blind? Will not one simply lead the other further down a path of darkness? Trouble is that sometimes the blinder we get, the happier we are.

Father, help us to see our own blindness, and to seek not other blind ones, but the clear vision that comes from our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
