Today’s Gospel reading from Mark 6 is the story of the beheading of John the Baptist. Sad and tragic, yes, but a great story for us about standing up for truth no matter the consequences.
There’s a very interesting line in today’s first reading from Hebrews 13. “Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels.” This implies that sometimes angels may enter our lives unbeknownst to us. Do you think that may have ever happened to you?
Here are some definitions of hospitality from Dictionary.com:
-
the friendly reception and treatment of guests or strangers.
-
the quality or disposition of receiving and treating guests and strangers in a warm, friendly, generous way.
In other words, treating others well. Serving others. As Christian people, this should be a given. And as the sacred author tells us, we must not neglect it.
Father, may we always exercise hospitality – to angels and people alike. Amen.
