Be a Lamp

Posted on

In today's first reading from 2 Samuel 7, we listen in on a conversation that King David has with the LORD. In the Gospel reading from Mark 4, Jesus asks a question about lamps.

"Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand?" Of course it's a rhetorical question. A lamp is made for giving light, to shine and dispel darkness. Placing it under a basket or a bed would defeat its purpose.

As a disciple of Christ Jesus, you must be a lamp. And you must understand that the devil wants nothing more than to throw a bushel basket on top of you or stuff you under a bed. Darkness hates light. but the light of Christ must be brought into the world to dispel the darkness. That's where you come in. Be a lamp.

Father, give us the grace and strength to be a lamp today, to shine the light of Christ into a dark world. Amen.
