The Adulterous, Murdering Man of God

Posted on

King David is referred to in Scripture as "a man after God's own heart." You'd never glean that from reading today's first reading from 2 Samuel 11.

From the top of his palace, the king sees a beautiful woman bathing. He has his servants fetch her and he has sex with this married woman. He gets her pregnant. To cover his tracks, he devises a plot to have her husband killed. Nice guy, huh?

This story should be a reminder that all of us, no matter how devout, are liable to fall. We are all human, all fallen, and we live in a fallen world. We must always be on our guard, lest we, too, fall into sin.

Father, may we be after your own heart. Keep us strong and vigilant in our battle against concupiscence and sin. Amen.
