Dr. Matthew Bunson calls in to talk with Gus about just one story today, which was the focus of a National Catholic Register piece, that talks about the substantial number of American bishops reaching the mandatory retirement age of 75. Dr. Bunson talks about those requirements and how, just because a resignation is submitted doesn’t mean it’s going to be immediately accepted. They also discuss the challenge it poses for Pope Francis, or his eventual successor, as he’ll soon have many vacancies to fill. Another interesting aspect is that 30% of priests who are offered a position as a bishop turns it down.

Also, we are starting the third week of Lent, so Gus invites listeners to call in and give their Lenten Progress Report. They talk about what they took on or gave up and how it’s going so far.

And Gus continues his daily Lenten reading and reflection of Psalm 51.
