Tomorrow is Independence Day and with so much fatalistic, self-hating going on in our country these days, Gus invites listeners to call in and share what’s right with America and also asks how they pray for our country. Also, Gus talks about patriotic songs being sung at mass. Gus asks listeners if they’re OK with that and invites them to call in to talk about it.
We also hear from Catholic/Contemporary Christian recording artist Brother Isaiah who calls in to talk about his latest single “Mysteries and Medicines” with J.J. Wright and Friends and subsequent album that’s dropping July 12th. Brother Isaiah, who is now Fr. Isaiah of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, also shares his vocation story with Gus.
And Dr. Matthew Bunson of EWTN News calls in to go over some Catholic news of interest with Gus, including the art of Fr. Marko Rupnik, S.J., which is mostly mosaics that occupy spaces at churches in Lourdes, Fatima, the Vatican and others throughout Europe. Fr. Rupnik has been accused by many women of sexual abuse and he’s already been removed by the Jesuits and will face the canonical process of excommunication. The bishop of Lourdes wants to remove all of his artwork, which is prominently displayed at the shrine. The question Gus and Dr. Bunson tackle is, should they remove the artwork out of respect for his victims or is that giving in to cancel culture? As Dr. Bunson points out, there have been many unsavory artists in the history of the Church.
Also, in Texas, a district judge has thrown out Texas AG Ken Paxton’s lawsuit against Annunciation House, a Catholic migrant shelter accused of facilitating illegal immigration. And there’s an update on the German Synodal Way. Since its inception, 400,000 Germans have quit the Catholic Church through official records. In Germany, for tax purposes, you have to file what your religion is because a portion of your income goes to the church of your choice. In order to stop that, you have to fill out paperwork stating that you are no longer of the religion of which you initially registered. In 2023, that number ballooned to 400,000. Lastly, Dr. Bunson talks with Gus about some new saints who will be canonized next year, including Blessed Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati.
