Today is the 18th anniversary of the Catholic Channel. Back on this day in 2006, Gus and Cardinal Edward Egan were the first voices heard on our airwaves and he recollects how he came to be the host of the morning show. Later, Gus invites any longtime listeners to call in and share how they came to find the channel and why they’ve stuck with it.

Also, Dr. Matthew Bunson of EWTN News calls in to talk with Gus about some topical news stories of Catholic interest. It starts off as an art critique as they begin with the grand reopening of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Lyons, France, which suffered horrendous fire damage in 2019 and cost around $760 million to rebuild. It seems there was a push initially by the Emmanuel Macron administration to modernize much of it, but pushback from French citizens prevented a lot of that. Afterwards, they discuss the Vatican’s annual Nativity scene, which will be unveiled on Saturday. They talk about some of the weird ones that have come under Pope Francis’ papacy and go over the reported theme of this year’s. They wrap up talking about the 21 new cardinals that Pope Francis is set to ordain this Sunday, which continues the pope’s mandate to go out to the peripheries.

And Mark Brumley, president and CEO of Ignatius Press calls in to talk about their Ignatius Study Bible, which covers both the Old and the New Testament. It’s approximately 2,400 pages long and Gus was euphoric when it arrived. Mark talks about the goal of the study Bible, which is to help readers understand the written word of God and apply its lessons to their lives today with the aid of the writings and theologies of the Church fathers, doctors and councils.
