Dr. Matthew Bunson of EWTN calls in to talk about a few news items of Catholic interest, including the rise of artificial intelligence, also known as AI, and the Vatican’s recent remarks that we need to stem the tide of “deepfakes,” which depict Pope Leo saying and doing things that he did not say or do. They say that authentic human communication needs to be preserved. This will be the theme of the “World Day of Communications,” which will be celebrated in the Vatican on January 24th. Another issue along the same lines is transhumanism, which is an intellectual and cultural movement that affirms the possibility and desirability of fundamentally improving the human condition through applied reason, especially by developing and making widely available technologies to eliminate aging and to greatly enhance human, intellectual, physical and psychological capacities. Fr. Michael Baggot has written a piece about it for Catholic News Agency. Lastly, they discuss this past weekend’s horrific shooting at a Mormon church in Michigan where the perpetrator, Thomas Jacob Sanford, drove his vehicle into the church, opened fire, and then set it on fire. It resulted in four deaths and five injuries. Sanford was killed by police. Gus and Dr. Bunson discuss the Catholic reaction to this terrible event.

Also, today is the Feast of St. Jerome. He is best known as being the chief translator of Sacred Scripture from Greek and Aramaic into Latin. It's become known as the Latin Vulgate and is the basis for every translation that's come afterward. In his honor, Gus plays Bible Roulette with listeners.
