Gus dedicates a good portion of his show to the Sign of Peace at Mass. Since that was reintroduced in the 1970 Roman missal, attendees have traditionally shaken hands in Western culture. When COVID hit and Catholics were allowed to attend mass once again, physical touch was discouraged, so priests either removed it altogether or insisted on head nods and waves. Now that we’re fully out of the pandemic, that has not changed, much to Gus’ discouragement. Gus has tried to shake hands as a sign of peace in his own parish, and some are okay with it, while others are not. He invites listeners to call in and share what goes on in their parish.
Later, Gus is joined by Angela Copenhaver, a convert to the Catholic faith and the founder of the pro-life group, We Teach Think. She converted a few years back but struggled with the Catholic Church’s stance on abortion. She was always pro-choice and even worked for Planned Parenthood for a while. She talks with Gus about her enlightenment on this issue and how she ministers to people who are going through that conflict now, which she wrote about recently for the National Catholic Register.
