Gus is joined by Elisabeth Nguyen, the co-author of a new book about her brother entitled “Cardinal Nguyen Van Thuan: Man of Joy and Hope.” Cardinal Van Thuan is a venerable, possibly on his way to sainthood, who spent 13 years imprisoned by the communist government in his home country of Vietnam for being Catholic clergy. When he was released in 1988, Pope John Paul II quickly elevated him to cardinal. Elisabeth shares her memories of her brother, his calling to the priesthood and what he endured in prison. During their conversation, Elisabeth, shared a tragic story with a silver lining. She had an uncle who was beaten to death by the communist regime so badly that his body was unidentifiable. One of her sisters was called to identify the body, but the only way she could was by a Rosary he kept in his breast pocket. Elisabeth told Gus that she still has that Rosary. Gus invites listeners to call in and talk about any precious religious articles they have in their possession.
Also, today is the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene, which is also the anniversary of Michelle’s spiritual conversion. Both she and Gus were raised Catholic, but both had fallen away since graduating high school. Gus shares the story of how his young daughter almost drowned in a pool back in 1987, which was the impetus to both of their spiritual reawakening. Michelle’s came first, which over the course of several months influenced Gus’. Gus invites listeners to call in and share their conversion/reversion stories.
St. Mary Magdalene and Ven. Nguyen Van Thuan, pray for us!
