Fr. Leo Patalinghug calls in to talk about a number of faith issues, including suffering and how we can make it a prayer. They also begin talking about today’s Feast of St. Januarius and the interesting phenomenon of his dried blood, which is a relic in a cathedral in Naples, Italy. For centuries, the blood of the 4th century saint liquifies often on his feast day. The conversation takes a detour when Gus mishears Fr. Leo talking about seminarians as “feminarians” and a new conversation about women who have an attraction to young men in the seminary emerges.
Later, Fr. Leo also talks about not always wearing his Roman collar when he’s out in public and how even priests need a little down time and not always be recognized. That doesn’t, however, preclude him from administering his priestly duties if the need arises in those moments. Also, earlier this morning, the Vatican had its press conference concerning the “spiritual experience” of Medjugorje and has essentially given the disputed pilgrimage site the green light for devotion, although it has not yet approved the alleged Marian apparitions. The religious shrine, where it’s believed by many that the Blessed Virgin Mary has been making regular appearances since 1981, has come under scrutiny from Pope Francis and has been the subject of a 15-year study. Fr. Leo talks about all that with Gus and his own personal experience there before becoming entering the seminary. He describes it as a life-altering experience.
Afterwards, Gus invites listeners to call in and share their Medjugorje experiences and then Bob Dunning calls in to talk college football but opens up discussing the use of the word “ain’t” and its origin. When he and Gus finally get to the topic of this weekend’s biggest college football games, they discuss Tennessee vs. Oklahoma and USC vs. Michigan and pick the winners.
