In honor of today’s Feast of St. Benedict, Gus reads and reflects on some of the Rule of St. Benedict, which lays out the way his monks should live in all aspects of their lives in order to draw closer to God. Much of it has to do with day-to-day monastic living, but it can also be interpreted as good guidelines for anybody seeking to live a a more spiritual life. Gus spends much time reading Chapter 7, which is a 12-step program towards humility. He's also joined by Fr. Robert Nixon, O.S.B., a longtime Benedictine priest who serves as the director of the Institute of Benedictine Studies at the Abbey of the Most Holy Trinity in New Nursia. He talks about a new book called “The Cross and Medal of St. Benedict: A Mystical Sign of Divine Power,” available from TAN Books, that compiles and translates many historical documents that explain the popular St. Benedict medal sacramental.

Later, Gus is joined by Tim Moriarty, the producer and director of the enormously successful “Jesus Thirsts” documentary, which has become the highest-grossing documentary of 2024 since its release in theaters last month. Tim is currently working on a documentary about Blessed Carlo Acutis’ short life called “Roadmap to Reality: Carlos Acutis and Our Digital Age.” He talks about the saint, who was a computer geek and an expert at programming and died at the age of 15 from leukemia and will be the first millennial saint when he’s canonized next year, and what he hopes to convey in the documentary.

Also, today's date is 7-11 and not only is it the name of a popular convenience store, but those are also two traditionally lucky numbers in dice games like craps. Gus asks listeners to call in and talk about if they believe that lucky numbers are a thing and if they have a lucky number of their own.

And we also hear from Bob Dunning who calls into the show for the first time since before Gus went on pilgrimage last month to talk about a number of things, including today being Slurpee day at 7-11 in honor of the date. Gus talks about how, back when he was in the landscaping business, he could suck down a 64-ounce Slurpee in 90 seconds and did it so often that he became immune to brain freeze. They also discuss one of Bob’s recent Substack columns where he responded to a phone survey and how confusing it got.

St. Benedict, pray for us!
