Gus reacts to the news that Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, an American, was elected pope yesterday and took the name Leo XIV. He was born and raised in Chicago, attended Villanova University in Philadelphia. He joined the Augustinian Order and spent much of his priesthood and episcopate in Peru where he has dual citizenship. Gus opens the phones up and gets listener reaction to our new holy father.

Later, Gus is joined by moral theologian Pia de Solenni who gives her reaction to the election of Pope Leo XIV and talks about the immediate needs of the Catholic Church, including the clergy sex abuse scandal fallout and Traditionis custodes. She talks about some of the immediate reactions and offers that the new pope needs our prayers and our patience and that the direction of the Church changes with each new pope.

Afterwards, Bishop Thomas Paprocki of the Diocese of Springfield, Illinois calls in to talk about the election of Pope Leo XIV, an Illinois native. He talks a little bit about the new pope’s background and Illinois ties, the excitement of the first U.S. pope and what this may mean for the Church moving forward.

And Gus extends the show a half-hour by playing Cardinal Timothy Dolan’s first post-conclave interview conducted by Fr. Dave Dwyer and Lino Rulli.
