Gus opens the phone lines up for listeners who want to call in and talk about what they're doing this year for Lent or talk about a life-changing past Lent where they did something difficult that has stuck with them. Also, in keeping with his Lent Kickoff theme, Gus goes over the rules and regulations for fasting and abstinence from the USCCB's Web site and talks about the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. He encourages his listeners to go a little bit further in both of those, if they can.
Also, Dr. Matthew Bunson of EWTN calls in to not only talk about some of the hottest Catholic news items, but also talk about some of the things associated with Lent like fasting and abstinence and their histories and meaning. Afterwards, Dr. Bunson talks with Gus about the murder of Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop David O'Connell and the update from yesterday that a suspect, Carlos Medina, was apprehended by police. He is the husband of Bishop O'Connell's housekeeper and his motive remains unclear. They also talk about the latest developments of Pope Francis' restrictions on the practice of the traditional Latin mass, which now requires permission from the Apostolic See. Dr. Bunson only takes this opportunity to talk about EWTN's upcoming journslism conference, in partnership with Franciscan University at Steubenville, entitled Journalism in a Post-Truth World.
