In today's Gospel reading from Matthew 13, Jesus explains the parable of the wheat and the weeds, where someone comes and sows weed seeds in a wheat field. For context, the weeds that Jesus speaks of looked very much like wheat, sometimes making is hard to discern which was which.
"The good seed [is] the children of the Kingdom. The weeds are the children of the Evil One, and the enemy who sows them is the Devil. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his Kingdom all who cause others to sin and all evildoers."
Now, I'm sure none of us would like to think of themselves as a "child of the Evil One." Yet when we sin - intentionally turn our backs on God - isn't that kind of what we are choosing to be? Let's pray that, as we are children of God, we can make the conscious decision to embrace that title more and more, and turn our backs on the Devil.
Father, we thank you for allowing us to be your children. May we always be mindful of that, especially when confronted with near occasions of sin. Amen.
