Jesus' Friends

Posted on

Today is the Feast of Saints Mary, Martha and Lazarus. There are two optional Gospel readings that center on this family. One is from John 20, a conversation between Jesus and Martha after Lazarus' death and before Jesus raises him. The other from Luke is the story of Martha and Mary.

Jesus loved this family deeply. While Jesus loves everyone deeply, He counted these among His closest friends. Jesus had many disciples but, like most of us, a select few true friends.

Friendship is such an important part of life. As I alluded to, I think most of us have many acquaintances, but just a handful of people we would consider very close friends - think "besties." Today, as we celebrate these close friends of our Lord, let us thank Him for our true friends.

Father, we thank you for the gift of friendship. Bless our friends and keep them always close to your heart, as we do. Amen.
