Wages and Gifts

Posted on

We call Jesus the Prince of Peace. In today's Gospel reading from Luke 12, Jesus says, "Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division." Read the rest to see what He means.

In the first reading from Romans 6, St. Paul writes, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

If you work (or worked), you earn a wage. So when we sin, death is what we earn. And since sin is cutting ourselves off from God, that death is eternal death. But wait, there's good news! God offers us a gift, the gift that leads to eternal life. But we must accept that gift. It is unearned. But it can be rejected. When we accept the gift (grace), we can reject sin. So the wages of sin is death, but the wages of accepting God's grace is eternal life. Which will you choose today?

Father, we accept the gift of your grace. May it sanctify us, that we will reject sin each day. Amen.
