Turning From Evil

Posted on

In today's readings we hear about Jonah. In fact, the first reading is from the Book of Jonah, where the Ninevites listen to Jonah and "they turned from their evil way."

In the Gospel reading from Luke 11, Jesus talks about this. "At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here."

I want to talk about the concept of evil today. We're not exactly sure what the people of Nineveh were doing that raised God's ire, but that it was evil. I suspect that whatever you and I are doing would not fall into the category of "evil." That's a strong word. But could even the "smallest" of sins be considered evil? If we're succumbing to the wiles of the Evil One, then could we actually be doing evil? As we pray in  the Our Father, let us ask God to deliver us from evil.

Father, help us to turn from our evil ways, repent, and return to you. Amen.
