Today's first reading is from the Book of Judges 2. It explains how the judges were like the prophets. They tried to keep the people on the right path, but the people kept falling into their old sinful habits.
In today's Gospel reading from Matthew 19, we see the story commonly known as the rich young man. Jesus tells him, "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
We know we will never achieve perfection. But Jesus gives us a formula, a recipe, if you will, to get us on our way. One may think it's very complicated, but it's not. It's just this: give to the poor and follow Jesus. Short, sweet and simple. Are you on your way to perfection?
Father, may we give generously to the poor and follow Jesus with all our hears, that we may be perfect. Amen.
