The Hidden Counsels of God

Posted on

God is a God of surprises. In the Gospel reading from John 7, the people of Jerusalem grumble about Jesus because they knew "where he is from." But Jesus replies, "I did not come on my own."

The first reading from Wisdom 2 is pretty much the story of Jesus. (But written centuries before Jesus appeared.) The wicked said, "Let us condemn him [the just one] to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him." But the Scripture explains, "they knew not the hidden counsels of God."

We're reminded of the thief on the cross who said, "If you are the Son of God, come down from that cross." So often we have expectations of how God should act. But God's ways, his counsels, are most often hidden and surprising. We often can only see them in hindsight. When things seem to be going south on us, we wonder if God is ever there. Let's remember that God's compass has no direction except his great love and compassion.

Father, help us to trust in your hidden counsels, though we know them not. Amen.
