In today's first reading, we read about the persecution of Stephen, one of the first deacons. This leads to his stoning, about which we will read tomorrow.
In the Gospel reading from John 6, some of the people Jesus had fed the day before come looking for Him in Capernaum. Jesus tells them, "Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you."
This begins what is known as the Bread of Life discourse. Jesus begins explaining the Eucharist. In the verses that follow He will speak again and again about how this "food that endures for eternal life" is bread, which is His Flesh, which must be eaten for eternal life. The word "Eucharist" doesn't appear, but as Catholics, we know that this is exactly what Jesus was talking about.
Father, may we always work for the food that endures for eternal life - Jesus. Amen.
