Bread from the Father

Posted on

Today's first reading gives us the story of the stoning of St. Stephen from Acts 7. In our Gospel reading from John 6, we hear Jesus say for the first time, "I am the bread of life."

When the people ask Jesus for a sign, they mention the manna that their ancestors ate in the desert. Jesus replies, "Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven."

We must always remember that the Eucharist - the bread of life - is not something magically made. It comes from God. It is supernatural. While the world simply sees a piece of bread, we see the true bread from heaven, Jesus, given to us by the Father.

Father, open our spiritual eyes that we may see the reality of the true bread come from heaven in the holy Eucharist. Amen.
