The Church's Medicine

Posted on

In today's first reading we see some typology. More in a moment. In the Gospel reading from John 5, Jesus heals a man who has been ill for thirty-eight years. This did not sit well with the Jews.

In Ezekiel 47, Ezekiel is shown the temple by an angel. As he gets further from the temple, water that started as a trickle eventually becomes an enormous river that gives life to everything around it. "Along both banks of the river, fruit trees of every kind shall grow...Their fruit shall serve as food, and their leaves for medicine."

The temple is a type, or pre-figuration of the Church. We are fed by the Eucharist, and the Sacraments are the medicine. Medicine is used to cure disease and illness. This, of course, is sin. The Sacraments give grace. They are the perfect medicine we need to overcome the sickness and disease that is sin.

Father, we thank you for the Sacraments and resolve to use the medicine you have given us to overcome our sinfulness. Amen.
