Spiritual Blindness

Posted on

Holding fast to faith is so important. The LORD tells Isaiah to reiterate this message in today’s first reading. “Take care remain tranquil and do not fear; let not your courage fail…Unless your faith is firm you shall not be firm!”

Jesus had done many mighty deeds. And they all pointed to the reality that He was sent by God, and given authority to do these many miracles. But not everyone recognized that reality. In today’s Gospel reading from Matthew 11, Jesus pronounces woes to Chorazin and Bethsaida, two towns where most of His mighty deeds had been done. They failed to recognize Jesus’ authority and His mission, and failed to repent. Thus the woes.

So many today suffer from the same malady. Spiritual blindness. They fail to “see” Jesus or recognize His authority. The reasons are many. But I think the overriding reason is the influence of the world. Through media and many other forms of pressure, Jesus’ message and mission is marginalized or, more often, completely ignored. We need to be sure that we are not blinded by the message of those who wish to remove Jesus from the culture and from people’s lives. Let’s make sure that we keep our spiritual eyes wide open all the time.

Father, help us to always see Jesus at work in the world, and in our lives. Help us to remains faithful always. Amen.
