Return

Posted on

Jesus was asked, “Which is the first of all the commandments?” (First in importance, not in number.) Do you know His reply? Hint: He said not one commandment, but two. Read His response in today’s Gospel reading from Mark 12.

The first line from today’s first reading from Hosea 14 really sums up the theme of Lent, and our spiritual lives on the whole. “Thus says the LORD: Return, O Israel, to the LORD, your God; you have collapsed through your guilt.”

Return to the LORD, your God. I think this applies to all of us, at all times. There may be times where we stray far from the Lord. Certainly a return is in order then. But even when things are going swimmingly in our spiritual lives, I think there are always things that we are holding back, places that we are apart from his will. Ask God today how you need to return to him.

Father, help us to seek your face, always desiring to return to you, whether we are near or far. Amen.
