Today's Gospel reading from Matthew 9 is the story of Jesus healing a paralytic. In today's first reading from Amos 7, Amos says, "I was no prophet, nor have I belonged to a company of prophets; I was a shepherd and a dresser of sycamores." Imagine that...a shepherd and a tree guy called to be a prophet.
Amos didn't know anything about prophesying. It wasn't in his family. It wasn't anything he had ever done. He was just a simple man. Yet when called by God, he followed the call. Imagine how intimidating that must have felt.
There's an old expression: God doesn't call the qualified; He qualifies the called. I suspect this was the case with Amos. Could it be the case with you? Perhaps God is calling you to exercise your prophetic voice in this confused world. But you feel unqualified. That's okay. Step out in faith anyway. Be like Amos. It may be tough sledding while you're here, but the eternal rewards will be well worth it.
Father, we hear you calling us to be prophets in the world. As we are so unqualified, we pray that you will qualify us. Amen.
