Today's Gospel reading from Matthew 13 is the parable of the sower. Jesus tells a story about a guy who goes out to sow seeds, and where all the seeds fell.
For the first reading today we begin a journey through the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah. We read about the call of Jeremiah. Jeremiah didn't think he was up to the task and came up with excuses. "I know not how to speak; I am too young." But God tells him, "To whomever I send you, you shall go; whatever I command you, you shall speak. Have no fear before them, because I am with you to deliver you."
Many think a prophet is one who foretells the future. Nope. A prophet is one who speaks for the Lord. Through our baptism, we are called to exercise the prophetic ministry - to speak truth. But prophesying is scary. Like Jeremiah, we feel unqualified. But remember what the Lord says. Have no fear. When we speak truth, God is with us. Lean into that today.
Father, give us the grace and strength we need today to prophesy, to speak truth in the world. Take away our fear, as we remember you are with us. Amen.
