Is the Bible "political"? I suppose that depends on one's definition of the word and point of view. Perhaps the definition of a particular word in today's first reading from 2 John is germane to this conversation as well.
"Anyone who is so 'progressive' as not to remain in the teaching of the Christ does not have God; whoever remains in the teaching has the Father and the Son."
2 John: 9
I'm referring to the word "progressive," but I suppose those with a particular worldview would want to parse any number of words in this passage. "Progressive" is a popular term in our present political climate. I think it denotes those who wish to slough off old ways and move "forward." In today's Scripture passage, I think it means pretty much the same - those who want to do away with the timeless teachings of Christ, as elucidated through His Church. I'm thinking of the German Synodal Way, Catholics for Choice and all those who "disagree" with and want to change the teachings of the Church. St. John says these people "do not have God." Though I'd bet that they think they do.
Father, may we never be so "progressive" as to dissent from the teachings of Christ. Keep us always faithful. Amen.

In the Douay- Rheims Bible, the same passage from today associates “Progressive” to “Revolter” as in Revolter of Christ. I believe today’s Progressive is depicted accurately, but wish for their hearts to welcome Christ. The Progessives I know do not have Christ in their lives, and they are proud with that position.
