Pray Before Speaking

Posted on

Ever say something you later regretted? I think we all have. Today’s first reading has the antidote! In the Gospel reading from Luke 9, some folks tell Jesus that they want to follow Him. Jesus’ responses may surprise you.

Nehemiah was an official of the king. He was always in a pretty good mood, for the king had never seen him sad. But Nehemiah had a heavy heart. The king asked, “What is it, then, that you wish?” The next line of the Scripture speaks volumes. “I prayed to the God of heaven and then answered the king.” Before opening his mouth, Nehemiah prayed. What a concept!

I find that far too often, I open my mouth and blurt things out without even thinking. Those seem to be the times when I embarrass myself or say something hurtful. Can you imagine how different things would be if we prayed before speaking – especially in high stress situations? The next time you’re frustrated or angry or upset, try saying a prayer before you speak. Ask God what he would want to come out of your mouth. Then say that.

Father, forgive us for the many times we pop off without thinking of you first. Give us the grace to ask you for the right words in every situation. Amen.

Today’s Readings

Today is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, one of the world's most beloved saints. Pray in thanksgiving for all the Franciscans in the world. St. Francis, pray for us!
