In today's Gospel reading from Luke 12, Jesus gives the crowd a warning. "Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one's life does not consist of possessions."
Jesus then goes on to tell a story about a very rich man who has grown complacent. But God says to him, "You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?" Jesus ends with this: "Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God."
One of my favorite bands, Switchfoot, has a song called "If the House Burns Down Tonight." One of the lyric lines is this: "You possess your possessions or they possess you." This is a great point for reflection today. Do you possess your possessions, or do they possess you?
Father, help us to always have a right relationship with possessions, and to be rich in what matters to you. Amen.
