In today's Gospel reading from Luke 12, Jesus tells His disciples to "Gird your loins..." I suspect that many today have no idea what this means, or what it may have looked like to Jesus' disciples. So let's take a closer look.
The tunic was a long garment that people wore, sort of like an ankle length dress. It would have been nearly impossible to do hard work or go into battle that way. So they had to bunch up the lower half of the tunic and tie it up above their knees to free up their legs to make the hard work or fighting possible. Here's a graphic to help get a visual.
In essence, we must always be ready to "gird our loins" and get to the hard work of living the Christian life, and do battle with the many forces of evil in the world today.
Father, help us to "gird our loins" and be prepared to fight the good fight today. Amen.
One way to "gird our loins" is to be armed with knowledge of the faith. The A Minute in the Church book series can help do that in a minute! Order a set today at www.GusLloyd.com.
Thanks Gus! I thought I knew what it meant as I had looked it up some time ago, but all that said was to tighten the belt to prepare for travel.
God bless!!
