On Authority

Posted on

In the Gospel reading from Mark 11, Jesus is asked about His authority.

“By what authority are you doing these things? And who gave you this authorityto do them?” Now usually, the chief priests and the elders were the ones who came up with trick questions for Jesus. But this time Jesus turns the tables and asks them a trick question. Check out the reading to see what that is. In the end, Jesus does not tell them from whom he gets his authority. They should have known anyway, huh?

Authority is sometimes a tough thing for us to accept. We don’t like to be told what to do. But, in the spiritual life, we must submit to authority. Jesus received His authority from the Father. And in turn, Jesus passed that authority down to the Apostles, who passed it on to their successors, etc. As Catholics and Christians, we all like to think that we submit to the authority of Jesus. But if we are not faithful to the teachings of the Church, then we really are not submitting to Jesus’ authority. Whoever has ears ought to hear.

Father, you gave authority to Jesus, who gave His authority to the Apostles and their successors. Help us today to submit to that authority, no matter how difficult it may be. Amen.
