Made for a Purpose

Posted on

In the first reading today from Judges 13, we see the story of an angel coming to announce the birth of a child. The woman was barren, and the angel told her that this child was “to be consecrated to God from the womb.” He would serve a very special purpose for the Kingdom of God. The woman had a son, and named him Samson.

In the Gospel reading from Luke 1, we see the story of an angel coming to announce the birth of a child. The woman was barren, and the angel told her husband that this child “will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb, and he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.” The child’s name would be John.

These stories sound very similar, no? Samson and John were both set apart, brought into the world for a very special purpose. Do you realize that the same is true about you? Now, an angel may not have come to your parents and foretold your birth. But God has brought you into the world for a very special purpose: to build up the Kingdom of God. It can be difficult for us to accept that we are as special as Samson or John. But it is the truth. Ask God to continue to reveal to you that special purpose for which you were brought into the world. Then pray for the grace and strength to fulfill that purpose.

Father, we know that you have brought us into the world for a purpose, just like Samson and John. Show us today how you wish for us to fulfill that purpose in the Kingdom. Amen.
