Today is the Fourth Sunday of Advent. Almost time to say Merry Christmas!
Yesterday we read the genealogy of Jesus from Matthew 1. We know from that reading that the Messiah would come from the line of David. But why was that so important? Because God had promised David that the Messiah would come from his line. We see this in the first reading from 2 Samuel 7 when the Lord God says to David, “I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins, and I will make his kingdom firm. I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me; your throne shall stand firm forever.”
According to Matthew 1, we know that Joseph was a descendant of David. Many scholars say that Mary, too, was descended from David’s line. Why is all this important? Because God is a God of His word. He promised that the Messiah’s parents would be from the line of David. And He kept that promise. He always keeps His promises. Have you heard about His great promises for your life?
Father, we thank you for always keeping your word. May your will come to pass in our lives. Amen.
