In today's Gospel reading from Matthew 5, Jesus teaches about the danger of anger and bearing a grudge. It's not pretty.
In the first reading from Ezekiel 18, the people say, "The LORD's way is not fair!" The LORD then tells of the importance of repentance, and turning away from wickedness. Of changing their own ways.
When I was a kid, my parents often reminded me that "life's not fair." I think I always perceived things as being unfair when they didn't go in my favor or the way I wanted them to go. A very dangerous trend I've noticed recently is the promoting of the victim mentality. Everything is someone else's fault. You're always the victim. This is rarely true. And you know what? Life's not fair. Get over it, and start thinking about changing yourself instead of expecting the world to change for you.
Father, give us a greater perspective to see the need for us to change our ways, rather than expecting everyone else to change to suit our desires. Amen.
