Jesus’ Yoke

Posted on

In today’s Gospel reading from Matthew 11, we hear familiar saying of Jesus.

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy and my burden light.”

A yoke is a device used to fasten two work animals together – oxen or mules or other beasts of burden. One thing a yoke does is keep the pair together; one can’t get in front of or behind the other. This tells us that Jesus desires us to be linked to Him. Not to get ahead of Him or fall behind Him, but to stay always by His side, as He will stay by ours. It’s not hard, because His yoke is easy.

Father, help us to always stay close to Jesus – to be yoked to Him throughout our journey. Amen.
