He is Out of His Mind

Posted on

For the first reading today, we start in 2 Samuel. Saul and his son, Jonathan, David’s best friend, have been killed in battle. David laments the death of these two great sons of Israel. The Gospel reading today from Mark 3 is very short; just two verses.

Jesus came with his disciples into the house. Again the crowd gathered, making it impossible for them even to eat. When his relatives heard of this they set out to seize him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.” Wow! Intersting, huh? Even Jesus’ relatives thought that He was out of his mind. It reminds of Jesus’ saying that a prophet is never accepted in his own home town.

I’m convinced that, through the years, as I have tried to live out my faith, many of my family members have said the same of me. “Oh, Gus and that Jesus thing…he’s out of his mind!” Let me just say this…if being a follower of Christ makes me out of my mind, then I really don’t ever want to be “in my mind” again!

Father, help us to take the verbal barbs of others in stride. Give us the grace not to back away from our faith, even when people think we are out of our mind. Amen.
