Life brings sorrows. With sorrows come tears. But it won’t always be that way. We see that in the first reading today from Isaiah 25. “The LORD GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces.” Our sorrows are temporary. Our joy will be eternal.
In the Gospel reading today from Matthew 15, we see Jesus feeding a multitude. Most people are familiar with the story. But do you know what He did before that miracle? He healed them of their infirmities. “The crowds were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the deformed made whole, the lame walking and the blind able to see, and they glorified the God of Israel.”
Jesus wasn’t only interested in making sure that the people had their bellies filled. He wanted to meet their spiritual and physical needs. He still does today. Especially in the Mass. It pains me to hear people say that they “aren’t getting fed” at Mass. Here’s my thought: in order to be properly fed, we must have not only open mouths, but open hearts. Then we will be able to gaze upon the Eucharist and quote today’s first reading, “Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us!”
Father, thank you for giving us Jesus to feed us physically and spiritually. May we always look upon Him with gratitude in our hearts. Amen.
