He Dwells Among Us

Posted on

Our first reading today is from the Prophet Zechariah. Zechariah has an encounter with an angel. More in a moment. Our Gospel reading today from Luke 9 is short. Jesus tells the disciples that “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.” But they did not understand, and were afraid to ask him about this.

Zechariah encounters a “man” who is going to measure Jerusalem. Zechariah realizes that it is an angel, who is joined by another angel. They begin to speak of the future of Jerusalem, and how the Lord will be “the glory in her midst.” Jerusalem did become a mighty city, but it won’t be until we see the New Jerusalem that we read about in the book of Revelation that this prophecy will be completely fulfilled.

We see part of today’s first reading from Zechariah every year during Advent, the season that leads to Christmas. “Sing and rejoice, O daughter Zion! See, I am coming to dwell among you, says the Lord.” Of course, we know that this prophecy was fulfilled in the person of Jesus. But this didn’t just happen in Jerusalem. It is happening even today; in every tabernacle in every Catholic Church in the world. And in the heart of every believer. Awesome, no??

Father, we thank you for sending your Son to dwell among us. May we always recognize and glorify Him. Amen.
