Today's Gospel reading from Luke 11 contains a famous saying of Jesus that most folks know: "And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you."
After this, though, Jesus continues with this: "What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? Or hand him a scorpion when he asks for an egg? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?"
We sometimes forget that God is a loving father. As a dad myself, I always want to do what is best for my children. So it is with God and us. We need to ask for the Holy Spirit. When we do, we will not be denied.
Father, fill us with your Holy Spirit, more and more each day. Amen.
