Finding Rest in Jesus

Posted on

Christians believe in the resurrection of the dead. This is an ancient belief that we see referenced in our first reading today from Isaiah 26.

Today’s Gospel reading from Matthew 11 is very short, just three verses. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.” Comforting words, indeed.

Finding rest these days can be an elusive thing. I find that as I get older, I don’t sleep as well as when I was younger. Now, this isn’t the kind of rest that Jesus is referring to. (Though you’ll probably sleep better when you find rest in Jesus!) Perhaps a better way to think of it would be respite. Jesus can bring us calm in the midst of turmoil, peace among chaos. The more we come to Jesus, the closer we draw to Him, the more rest we will find.

Father, you know how chaotic our lives can be. Help us to still our hearts and find rest in Jesus. Amen.
