Finding Rest in Jesus

Posted on

In our Gospel reading today from Matthew 11, Jesus issues an invitation. “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

Sometimes it seems like the pressures of life are just overwhelming, doesn’t it? With our hectic schedules, running around, always something to do, someone who needs your attention, gotta go, gotta go, gotta go…crazy, isn’t it? Seems like it’s all we can do just to get by sometimes. Jesus knows this. Thus His invitation.

So how do we go about “finding rest” in Jesus. This can be a mystery to many. We simply have to make the effort to let go of all the stuff that we hang on to. We must make a concerted effort to still our hearts and meditate on Jesus’ love for us. Try finding a specific place, either in your home or perhaps before the Blessed Sacrament. Make time to spend with Jesus. Block everything out of your schedule and leave your worries at the door. Better yet, leave them at the feet of Jesus. He’ll take them from you. And you can just rest a while.

Father, you know that it can be so hard to still our hearts. Help us to find rest in Jesus. Amen.
