Today's Gospel reading is the story of the prodigal son from Luke 15. There are so many things to reflect on from this story. It's always good to pick a character and put yourself in that person's place.
Today I want to reflect on something the father said to his older son. When the son complained that the father had never thrown him a banquet, the father says to him, "My son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours."
Do you know that is how it is with you and God? He has given you everything. Unfortunately, we too often play the comparison game. Look what those people have! Why can't I have that, Lord? But that's such a twisted way to look at things. Rather than see what others have (what we think we don't have), take a look at all the blessings God has showered you with. Everything he has is yours.
Father, thank you for your generosity to us. Help us not to compare our blessings to others, but to always be grateful for your many gifts. Amen.
