Dirty Little Secrets

Posted on

The Book of Proverbs is filled with so much timeless wisdom. Our first reading today from Proverbs 3 is no exception. “Envy not the lawless man and choose none of his ways.” Be sure to read it and soak up the wisdom of the ages!

In the Gospel reading from Luke 8, Jesus says, “For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light.” Scary words, no? We all have our own little secret sins. And we want to be sure keep them just that: secret. But that isn’t how it works, is it? Sooner or later, our secrets will come to light. It may not be in this lifetime. But it will come to pass.

Why is it that we think we can fool even God? Oh, we can fool other people. We may even be able to fool ourselves. But God knows even the deepest darkest secrets we harbor. Now, that doesn’t mean that He is waiting to cast us into hell for our secret sins. They can be forgiven. But first we must acknowledge them. This is the hardest part of confession. We must open ourselves up and reveal even the darkest secrets we keep. But if we are repentant, we will be forgiven. Think of it this way…God knows your secrets anyway. Why not get them off your chest?

Father, help us to bring our secrets out into the light of Christ. Forgive us for our secret sins, and give us the grace to sin no more. Amen.
